DOCTOR REVEALS MOST EFFECTIVE DRUG IN BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

25th November 2023

Over 100 medical health professionals met on Saturday, November 25 in Nairobi, for the 1st East Africa Oncology Summit. Speaking during the summit, Dr. Riaz Kasmani asserted that fulvestrant is a more effective drug in breast cancer treatment.

Fulvestrant is a selective estrogen receptor degrader that binds, blocks and degrades the estrogen receptor (ER), leading to complete inhibition of estrogen signaling through the ER. Multiple trials have been undertaken to compare fulvestrant with other endocrine treatments, and results have shown it to have similar efficacy to anastrozole, tamoxifen and exemestane at 250 mg every 28 days.
However, when given at 500 mg every 28 days, with an extra loading dose on day 14, it has demonstrated an improved progression-free survival (PFS) compared to anastrozole.
Such are the reasons that moves Dr. Riaz to believe that fulvestrant is the most effective drug in breast cancer treatment in comparison to the rest.

"Fulvestrant is superior to be used by breast cancer treatment, compared to other drugs." Dr. Kasmani noted.

Moreover, he stressed on the need for precision oncology which aims to improve treatment outcomes by focusing on the specific biological features of each patient's cancer. By his account, this involves tailoring cancer treatment to the patients characteristics and their specific type of cancer.

This involves considering factors such as the genetic makeup of the tumor and its molecular profile. He added that by analyzing this information, doctors worldwide can choose treatments that are more likely to be effective and minimize potential side effects.

Further, Dr. Kasmani has called on men across the world to be vigilant about their breast health. He as well noted that mistakenly, many people have associated breast cancer with women, despite men also being at risk of contracting this unremidiable disease.

He notes that regular self-examinations, awareness of any changes, and seeking medical attention for unusual symptoms can help in early detection, improving the chances of successful treatment.

The 1st East Africa Oncology Summit has been organized the Sky planners, sponsored by Astrazeneca and the Kenya Societies of Haematology and Oncology.
