THE 16TH GLOBAL HEALTH SUPPLY CHAIN SUMMIT KICKS OFF IN NAIROBI, KENYA

The 16th Global Health Supply Chain Summit has officially began in Nairobi, Kenya. The official opening ceremony was spearheaded by Kenya's Council of Governors Health Committee Chairman Hon Muthomi Njuki, who said that it is hard to start a journey about Universal Health Coverage without insistence on a reliable supply chain.

Governor Njuki also said that local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry must be supported to foster local production and lower the cost of health-care in the country.

"We can not talk about Universal Health Coverage without insistence on a reliable supply chain. We also must be purposeful as directed by H.E President William Ruto in supporting the local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry to foster local production and lower the cost of health-care in the country." He said.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities in global health systems and supply chains, emphasizing the critical importance of accessible and resilient healthcare. To address these challenges, countries around the world are recognizing the need to diversify and strengthen their supply chains.

The conference, with the theme “The Journey to Self-Reliance: Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains for Equitable Access to Healthcare,” will provide a platform for experts, stakeholders, and practitioners to explore innovative strategies for achieving self-reliance in healthcare supply chains. The 2023 conference aims to seize the opportunity to incorporate greater self-reliance into country-led supply chain diversification efforts.

Speaking during a media briefing, the Managing Director for Strategic Healthcare Consultant and an Ethiopian-native Canadian health care expert Dr. Maraki Fikre, access to medicine, good politics and affordable health care has become a major problem in African governments, adding that 98% of African products are imported from outside.

"Access to medicine, good politics and affordable health care has become a big problem in African governments. 98% of our products are currently imported from outside, that is India, China, and not locally manufactured." She said.

Building upon last year’s GHSCS, which focused on reimagining health supply chains for equity, resilience, and country ownership, the 2023 conference will delve into the various forms of self-reliance and the steps required to achieve them. These steps include cultivating an enabling environment through governance and innovative financing mechanisms, supporting and scaling innovation, and enabling local supplier development and regional manufacturing. The conference will facilitate discussions and knowledge sharing on these critical topics through keynotes, panel discussions, and contributed talks.

The 2023 Global Health Supply Chain Summit promises to be a crucial event in advancing the goal of self-reliance in healthcare supply chains. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among diverse stakeholders, this conference will contribute to strengthening global health systems and ensuring equitable access to healthcare. We invite researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to submit their proposals and join us in Nairobi, Kenya, for this significant event. Together, we can pave the way for sustainable and resilient supply chains that improve the lives of millions across the globe.

This important conference, taking place from November 14 to 16 in Nairobi, Kenya aims to raise awareness about the critical need for sustainable and resilient supply chains to ensure equitable access to healthcare. We believe it is crucial to promote this event to support the shared mission of advancing healthcare in Africa and beyond.
