PS FOR DIASPORA AFFAIRS MS ROSELINE NJOGU OFFICIALLY OPENS THE KENYA DIASPORA HOMECOMING CONFERENCE

Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu officially opened the Annual Kenya Diaspora Homecoming Convention in Nairobi. This year's convention which is running between 6th and 8th December, themed "Innovation, FinTech and Investments Towards the One Trillion Shilling Remittance," is being held at Safari Park hotel, Nairobi.

During the opening ceremony which was attended by among other guests, some members of the Committee on National Security, Defense and Foreign Relations, Dr. Shem Ochuodho, the Global Chair of the Diaspora Association,  PS Njogu noted that the Ruto administration created a new State Department specifically for Diaspora Affairs because of the critical role the diaspora plays.

The Chief Execative Officer for the Capital Markets Authority Wycliffe Shamiah said that working closely with local financial institutions is crucial since it will enable the creation of a conducive environment for diaspora investments.
"It is important to prioritize financial literacy among the diaspora community to ensure they make informed investment decisions. Collaboration with local financial institutions and regulatory bodies is crucial to create a conducive environment for diaspora investments." 

Mr. Shamiah further said that the government should explore opportunities for partnerships with diaspora entrepreneurs to promote economic growth and job creation in Kenya. "The government should implement policies that incentivize diaspora investments, such as tax breaks or investment grants." 

In regards to technology, Mr. Shamiah said it is essential to establish a transparent and efficient remittance system to facilitate easy transfer of funds from the diaspora to Kenya. We should leverage technology to provide innovative financial solutions tailored to the needs of the diaspora community, such as mobile banking and digital investment platforms.

Mr Shamiah has held different positions in different departments, having joined as a research officer, promoted to senior research officer before being appointed senior financial analyst cum internal auditor. He was then promoted to the position of Assistant Manager, Compliance in 2001 before taking on the responsibilities of officer in charge of compliance from 2003 to 2005. He was then appointed Manager, Market Supervision in 2009 and became the pioneer Director of Market Operations in 2011.

The Annual Kenya Diaspora Homecoming Conference (KDHC 2023), slated for 6th to 8th December, 2023 is the 10th in an unbroken series. The conference aims to bring together Kenyans living and working abroad to celebrate the year that has passed, network, make projections, and receive updates on upcoming opportunities and activities. The event is a double-hybrid (ConfExpo, virtual/in-person), with about 1,000 participants expected in person and thousands more engaging virtually from all over the world, and over 100 organizations exhibiting or otherwise participating in some form.
