GOVERNMENT UNEP,UNICEF,JACOB LADDER COLLABORATE TO INAUGURATE GREEN JOBS FOR YOUTH PACT INITIATIVE

Government  of Kenya Collaborates with UNICEF,UNEP and Jacob Ladder to inauguarate High Level Roundtable on Green Jobs and Skill Development initiatives today to address and promote access to economic opportunities for youths in Kenya that is inline with" Bottom up Economic Approach".

The objectives of this  incentive is to Align with government priorities Understand key government pathways, deliverables, and key priority sectors to achieving the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Create linkages between green jobs and the outcomes of the Africa Climate Summit, as spelled out in the Nairobi Declaration and championed by H.E President  William Samoei Ruto.

Establishing ministerial focal points to support national coordination of green jobs development,Outline potential areas of collaboration to develop a legal framework supporting green jobs and skills development in Kenya.

Principal Secretaries (PS )from Ministry of Labour Hon.Shadrack Mwadime,Dr Esther Mworia, Ps TVET and Eng Festus Ngeno Ministry of Environment and Forestry gave remarks on the initiative and it's importance to the Society and the Youths. The event took place at a Hotel in Nairobi.

Dr. Esther Mworia PS Technical Vocational Education Training  (TVET ) gave a brief  outline about the Kenya National Adaptation Plan 2015-2030, where she defined BETA’s Commitment to Green Jobs , Advancing and Greening Technical and Vocational Education and Training Green TVET,Partnerships for Sustainable Development,Africa’s Challenges and Opportunities,Green Jobs Potential.

She added that Green TVET also prepares people for green jobs that contribute to preserving or restoring the quality of the environment, while improving human well-being and social equity.

The Principal Secretary Ministry of Environment and Forestry said Among the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda's priority sectors are the environment and natural resources, with a focus on green growth development and green job opportunities for Kenya. 

He said," to undertake this, the country will undertake a wider-reaching and fundamental restructuring of its activities to create low-carbon and climate-resilient development pathways.".

Speaking Rose Mwebaza, UNEP Africa Regional Office Director said: “Africa is the only region where the youth bulge will continue to grow in the foreseeable future. If we seize the opportunity to develop and implement the right policies, Africa will reap the demographic dividend

“67% of youth in Kenya are facing unemployment, coupled with a lack of required skills that would enable better access to income-earning opportunities. We have an opportunity ahead of us to address this gap in job access while accelerating the country’s transition to a green economy,” said Sellah Bogonko, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Jacob’s Ladder Africa.

Various bodies have Collaborated  Initiative to organise the first ever National Green Jobs this bodies  include International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) along with the Government of Kenya and Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) as implementing partners.
