The government plans to retire 39,361 civil servants within the next five years as part of its restructuring efforts. This is in addition to 7,477 officers who retired between September 2023 and June 2024. The payroll data reveals that 43,976 officers aged 55 years and above will retire between now and 2029, with 7,662 expected to retire within this financial year alone.
The government’s objective is to free up positions and create employment opportunities for younger Kenyans. The announcement further highlighted that 39,441 civil servants currently serving on contract terms will see their contracts expire soon, thereby opening an estimated 46,838 job opportunities for young people.
In addition to retirement measures, the government celebrated this year’s International Youth Day under the theme, *"From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development."* The theme emphasized the role of digital innovation in driving socio-economic transformation and sustainable development both within Kenya and globally.
This initiative showcases the government’s commitment to integrating the voices of the youth into policy-making and governance while addressing unemployment issues among the younger population.
