The Board of Directors of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has issued a strong statement to address what it calls "malicious propaganda" circulating on social media about its governance and management. The Board reaffirmed its unwavering support for CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, who has been at the helm of MCSK for two years.

In the statement, the Board expressed satisfaction with Dr. Mutua's leadership, describing him as a transformative force for the organization and the Kenyan music industry. Since his appointment, Dr. Mutua has introduced vibrant strategies to promote musical talent and protect the rights of artists. His efforts, the Board noted, have brought greater visibility to MCSK and elevated the value of music in Kenya.

The controversy stems from allegations propagated by individuals claiming to be MCSK directors, which the Board has dismissed as false and malicious. According to the statement, these individuals are under investigation for filing irregular documents with the Registrar of Companies and attempting to disrupt MCSK's operations.

The Board further accused these parties of colluding with "cartels" seeking to misappropriate funds collected through the Private Copying Remuneration (Blank Tape Levy) and to introduce a new licensing system designed to exploit musicians.

“The actions of these individuals are defamatory and aimed at undermining the progress we’ve achieved under Dr. Mutua’s leadership,” the statement read.

In response, the Board has initiated legal proceedings against the perpetrators and plans to present the issue for discussion at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). It has also resolved to impose disciplinary measures on any members involved in these "unprocedural and unlawful activities."

To ensure transparency and fairness, the MCSK Board announced that it would hold national elections in the next two weeks, supervised by the Registrar of Companies and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The Board concluded by emphasizing its commitment to protecting the rights and interests of its over 16,000 members while reiterating its confidence in Dr. Mutua’s leadership.

For now, the organization remains focused on its mission to uplift the music industry and safeguard the livelihoods of Kenyan artists.
