For over 30 years, IYF has dedicated itself to empowering the youth of Kenya. By providing more than 1 million young people with the essential skills they need to succeed, IYF is paving the way for a generation that will rise to the challenges of the 21st century. In a society where the traditional path of formal education may no longer guarantee success, IYF is shifting the focus toward acquiring real-world skills in fields such as digital marketing, engineering, paramedics, entrepreneurship, and creative arts—areas that are in high demand in the job market.

The festive atmosphere at the IYF Headquarters along Thika Road saw a crowd of over 30,000 attendees, all gathered to celebrate the culmination of a transformative journey. The event marked the grand Season 7 Free Weekend Academy Graduation.

This year, more than 5,000 young people graduated with certificates in various fields. From plumbing to fashion and design, beauty and hairdressing to computer packages, and catering to camera operations, IYF’s comprehensive courses are shaping young minds to think beyond traditional educational routes and seize the opportunities presented by the modern economy.

In her speech, Ms. Emily Maina, Director of Youth Social Development, State Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to youth development. She recognized the importance of efforts like IYF’s in fostering skills, leadership, and a positive mindset among the youth.

“We know that Kenya is a youthful nation, with 75% of the population under 35. This segment has the power to change the country,” she said. “It is gratifying to see partnerships like the one we have with IYF, which are contributing significantly to harnessing the youth demographic dividend for Kenya’s future prosperity.”

Kiambu Deputy Governor, Ms. Rosemary Kirika, also joined in the celebrations, congratulating the graduates and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

Meanwhile, IYF Chairman Rev. Yohan Kim shared an empowering message with the graduates. “Focus on your mindset, not just on material wealth,” he advised. “Many believe that money, intelligence, or education alone can lead to happiness. But true success comes from the right attitude, perseverance, and the desire to contribute positively to the world.”

The IYF Free Weekend Academy, which operates on weekends over three-month periods, has been instrumental in transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth—especially those who have faced barriers to further education due to financial constraints. Many of the graduates are Form 4 leavers, for whom this initiative represents an opportunity to expand their skills and shape their futures.

Since its inception in 2007, the IYF Free Weekend Academy has trained and graduated over 60,000 young people who have gone on to become valued members of society, making meaningful contributions across various sectors. With 29 practical courses available, the academy offers young people a chance to acquire skills that can make an immediate impact in the workforce. The best-performing graduates receive scholarships to continue their education at Mahanaim College, a partner institution.

As the ceremony came to a close, the excitement in the air was palpable, not only because of the accomplishments of the graduates but because of the hope and potential that their journey represents for Kenya’s future. The next intake for the IYF Free Weekend Academy begins on February 22, 2025, offering another cohort of youth the opportunity to join this life-changing program and embark on a path toward success.
