Jubilee 2025 Campaign Calls for Debt cancellation Africa -12th Feb 2025

The Catholic Church has officially launched the Jubilee 2025 Africa Campaign, aiming to address Africa's growing debt crisis and promote global financial reform. Inspired by the success of the Jubilee 2000 campaign, which saw over $100 billion in debt cancellation, the Jubilee 2025 initiative seeks to advocate for the cancellation of unjust debts that hinder the development of some of the world's poorest countries, including Uganda, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

The campaign, which is part of a broader effort to promote justice, equity, and human dignity, was launched in Nairobi, Kenya, and emphasizes the moral and ethical dimensions of debt. According to Fr. Charles Chilufya, S.J., Director of Jesuits Justice and Ecology Network Africa (JENA), "Debt is not just an economic issue; it is a moral one." The Church is calling for the cancellation of unsustainable debts, which continue to perpetuate inequality and prevent nations from investing in critical sectors like health, education, and infrastructure.

The Jubilee 2025 campaign also seeks to raise awareness about the need for reforms in the global financial system, ensuring fairness, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable communities. With over 22 African countries currently facing debt distress or at high risk, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic shocks, the Church emphasizes that transformative change is possible through global solidarity, community mobilization, and partnerships with civil society and governments.

Fr. Charles Sampa Kasonde, Chairman of AMECEA (Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa), highlighted that the campaign is rooted in the Catholic Church's enduring commitment to social justice and is guided by Pope Francis's vision for a fairer, more compassionate global financial system.

The Jubilee 2025 campaign calls on all sectors of society to work together in securing the cancellation of unjust debts, advocating for systemic reforms, and ultimately freeing Africa from the constraints of unsustainable debt, fostering a future of dignity, justice, and development for millions.
