Public Invited to Tour First Latter-day Saint Temple in East Africa

By Jared Odhiambo

History is being made in East Africa as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites the public to tour its newly completed Nairobi Kenya Temple—the first of its kind in the region. The open house is scheduled to run from Thursday, April 17 to Saturday, May 3, 2025, excluding Sundays.
Located in Mountain View, Hinga Road, off Waiyaki Way, Nairobi, the temple is open for free public tours which include an introductory welcome and a guided 40-minute walking tour. The tours will also feature the adjacent Latter-day Saint meetinghouse.

The Nairobi Kenya Temple stands as the 204th temple worldwide for the Church and will serve over 80,000 members in seven countries. Following the open house, the temple will be officially dedicated on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The journey to this milestone began decades ago. Latter-day Saint missionaries first arrived in Nairobi in 1980, and the Church was officially registered in Kenya in 1991. Steady growth followed, with Church membership expanding across the country and the region.

Plans for the temple were first announced in April 2017 by then-Church President Thomas S. Monson, with groundbreaking held in September 2021. The Nairobi Kenya Temple reflects years of faith, service, and commitment by local members.

Latter-day Saint temples are distinct from regular meetinghouses and serve as sacred places for ceremonies that unite families and reaffirm spiritual commitments.
