The government’s Affordable Housing Programme has received fresh backing from community leaders and residents across Nairobi, as officials reported growing uptake of housing units and preparations for new allocations in Machakos County.

Speaking during a Sensitization Forum on Affordable Housing and Diaspora Job Opportunites in Nairobi, Mr. Cosmas Mutava, the Director of the Affordable Housing Board, affirmed that citizens are embracing the initiative and taking up completed homes."Today we had discussions with leaders from various locations and wards in Nairobi, and we have agreed that they are going to take affordable housing units in all the sites that we are building,” said Mr. Mutava.“We have completed some houses in Mukuru and 1,080 homes have already been taken by citizens. We also went to Homa Bay, where houses were allocated and fully taken. Next is Machakos, where we plan to allocate homes anytime from now,” he added.

Mr. Mutava urged the public to support the programme, noting that President William Ruto is expected to visit Machakos soon to commission the new housing units.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Catherine Cheva from Embakasi South, shared her emotional testimony, expressing gratitude to the President and God for the life-changing opportunity.“I want to thank our President, Mr. William Ruto, because he helped us leave the slums and gave us affordable houses in New Mukuru,” she said.“I’ve lived in Nairobi for a long time and have never stayed in a decent house. I thank God because I got an affordable house at Mukuru, my house is number AB Block 618. I will be moving in very soon, and many of us who got homes are excited. It’s not propaganda, people are registering and the houses are real,” she emphasized.

Community leaders echoed her sentiments, including Mr. Patrick Musili, Chairman of the Kenya Water Institute, who described the initiative as a transformative opportunity for ordinary citizens.“Today’s meeting brought together leaders from Nairobi, especially from the Kamba community, those who work and vote here,” said Mr. Musili.“The main goal was to speak to our people and encourage them to register for the housing project. We are very grateful to President William Ruto for launching this programme, because many of us, even small-scale traders and bodaboda riders, have managed to get homes through affordable means, with payment plans suited to their income.”

He confirmed that a good number of participants attended the meeting, representing constituencies within Nairobi, and that many of their concerns were addressed by Mr. Mutava and other officials.“The Kamba community in Nairobi has been assured that the housing project, both in Nairobi and nearby counties is real. It's not propaganda. So we are encouraging our people to apply because the government has given everyone the chance to own a home.”

The Affordable Housing Programme, a key pillar of President Ruto's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), aims to deliver hundreds of thousands of low-cost, quality housing units across the country, enabling Kenyans of all backgrounds to own homes through accessible payment plans.
