AA Kenya Honours Road Safety Champions at Inaugural Road Safety Excellence Awards Gala
Nairobi, Kenya – 5 July 2025 – In a landmark celebration of innovation and impact, AA Kenya hosted the inaugural Road Safety Excellence Awards Gala Dinner last evening at Pullman Hotel, Nairobi. The event brought together distinguished guests from government, private sector, academia, and civil society, all united by a common goal: making Kenyan roads safer for every citizen. The awards ceremony recognized individuals, organizations, and institutions that have gone above and beyond in implementing transformative road safety initiatives across the country.
In attendance were high-ranking dignitaries including Principal Secretary, State Department of Sports, Hon. Elijah Mwangi, Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Mr. George Njau, Traffic Commandant Dr. Fredrick Ochieng, and representatives from the Kenya Police Service, Kenya Airways, KCA University, and the Kenya Motor Sports Federation, among others.
Delivering the keynote address, Francis Theuri, Group Managing Director of AA Kenya, lauded the winners and nominees for their commitment to action: “Tonight’s awards serve a triple purpose: to recognize excellence, inspire replication, and catalyze enduring change. It’s time to walk the talk. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
The awards evaluated hundreds of submissions from SACCOs, transport associations, universities, primary schools, government agencies, and corporates. Winners were selected based on their demonstrated impact, innovation, and sustainability, supported by tangible evidence including data, photos, reports, and testimonials.
Some of the winning innovations highlighted included:
- Universities integrating driver training into curriculum and leading urban planning research for safer cities.
- SACCOs and boda boda associations enforcing protective gear usage and road safety training.
- Corporates introducing driver wellness checks, monitoring systems, and policy reforms to improve driver behavior.
Jinaro Kibet, President of AA Kenya and of the African Council of Touring and Automobile Clubs (ACTA), emphasized the awards’ alignment with global efforts:
“These awards are a strategic contribution to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030) and Kenya’s Vision 2030. Under the FIA umbrella, we are empowered not just to dream of safer roads but to build them.”
He also highlighted AA Kenya’s global recognition through its Safe to Load technology, recently named a finalist in the FIA Innovation Challenge 2024.
Timothy Keli, Director of Mobility Services at AA Kenya, set the tone for the evening:
“Every statistic has a face, every number a name. The champions we recognize tonight have turned data into decisive action. This ceremony is not the finish line—it’s the launchpad for the next era of Kenyan road safety.”
As the evening concluded, the call to action was clear: for every stakeholder to invest in continuous driver education, champion policy change, and actively collaborate toward Kenya’s goal of zero-death roads.
