Senators Urge Governor to Seize Dialogue Window and Fix Nairobi Issues

Nairobi, September 4, 2025 – A section of Senators has called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to use the ongoing political truce with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to deliver lasting solutions for the capital’s pressing problems.
Speaking during a media briefing at PanAfric Hotel, the lawmakers welcomed the decision by MCAs to suspend an impeachment motion against the governor, describing it as a win for dialogue and stability.
“We want to use this opportunity not only to speak to Nairobians but also to the Governor. This is a window he must not let close because if he fails, what happens in Nairobi will affect all of us,” one senator noted, warning that political instability in City Hall could paralyze service delivery across the county.
The senators emphasized that while the impeachment was shelved, agencies such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission remain free to investigate governance and accountability concerns. “An impeachment would only remove the head. But issues of corruption or grabbed property can still be pursued by competent agencies,” they stated.
They acknowledged both successes and failures under Sakaja’s administration, pointing to progress in infrastructure and water projects, but lamenting slow action on garbage collection, sewage, and service delivery in informal settlements. “Let’s give credit where it is due, but also admit that much more remains undone,” they said.
The lawmakers also commended President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga for intervening to avert what they termed a looming leadership crisis in Nairobi. They dismissed claims that the truce was meant to shield the governor from accountability, terming such views as “outrageous.”
Looking ahead, the senators urged Sakaja to collaborate with MCAs and Nairobi residents to deliver on promises in the remaining one and a half years before the next election. “Ultimately, the people will decide at the ballot whether he has delivered or not,” they concluded.
