Opposition Coalition Pledges Unity Behind Single Candidate to Challenge Ruto

Leaders from Kenya's united opposition have reaffirmed their commitment to stay together and fully support a single presidential candidate against incumbent William Ruto in the next election. They emphasized that national interests outweigh personal political goals.
The pledge was made at the Democratic Party's national congress in Nairobi, where former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was officially endorsed as the party's leader and presidential candidate. The event was attended by a coalition of prominent opposition figures, including Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang'i, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Kalonzo Musyoka.

Muturi accused Kenya Kwanza allies of trying to disrupt opposition solidarity, even alleging attempts to sponsor a rival candidate against him. He labeled anyone working to create division as "an enemy of the people," but expressed confidence that the country can still be set on a corrective course.
Other leaders echoed the unity message. Karua stated their shared purpose is to install better leadership and "liberate Kenya." Kalonzo Musyoka said unity is the only path to defeating Ruto, while Matiang'i warned that those expecting the coalition to fragment would be disappointed. Gachagua assured supporters they would present a candidate capable of making Ruto a one-term president.

In contrast, President Ruto, speaking at a UDA party meeting, expressed strong confidence in his own coalition's strength. He predicted that his alliance with ODM would secure him a victory margin of two to three million votes in 2027. Ruto defended the UDA-ODM cooperation as essential for national unity and for advancing his administration's transformation agenda.
