The Nairobi Hospital Achieves Double Certification on Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Management
The Nairobi Hospital has received two internationally recognized certifications, i.e. - ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) following a successful recertification for the 6th cycle and ISO 45001:2018 on Occupational
Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) - reaffirming its commitment to delivering
high-quality healthcare within a safe, sustainable, and secure environment.
The two certifications were issued by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
The recertification of ISO 14001:2015 EMS and the hospital’s inaugural certification of ISO
45001:2018 OHSMS, are significant recognition to the hospital’s continued implementation
of sustainable approaches to healthcare delivery that have strengthened institutional safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
“By attaining ISO 45001, you affirm that the wellbeing of your staff is safeguarded
deliberately and proactively. By sustaining ISO 14001 through six certification cycles, you
demonstrate that environmental stewardship is not episodic it is embedded.” Stated Esther
Ngari, Managing Director, KEBS, during the event.
The Nairobi Hospital has embedded a strong culture of continuous quality improvement through implementation and maintenance of internationally recognized standards published by the International Organization for Standardization. The hospital maintains additional certifications including ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and ISO
22000:2018 Food Safety Management System.
Additionally, the hospital laboratory is
accredited to ISO 15189:2022 and continues to pursue Joint Commission International
Accreditation (JCIA).
Speaking after officially receiving certificates from KEBS, Felix Osano, Chief Executive
Officer of The Nairobi Hospital, emphasized that quality remains a continuous journey.
“Environmental sustainability and safety benchmarks are crucial aspects in today’s dynamic
healthcare environment. It is our commitment to continue elevating our standards to be
better positioned to execute our mandate in society. Achieving certification in environmental
and occupational health and safety management keeps us increasingly aware the part we have to play in creating a safe environment for current and future generations.”
He further reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to continuous system improvement,
integration of management systems for data-driven decision-making, and achievement of
global healthcare quality benchmarks through Joint Commission International Accreditation.
Ms. Ngari added, “To facilitate this partnership and dedication to improvement, KEBS has
resolved to establish a dedicated green channel for The Nairobi Hospital ensuring faster
turnaround times and priority service delivery for your calibration and technical support
needs.”
The certifications came after a comprehensive and rigorous process that included leadership
commitment, staff training, systems gap analysis, development of policies and standard
operating procedures, internal audits, management reviews, and two-stage external audits
conducted by KEBS in September and October 2025.
The certifications reinforce The Nairobi Hospital’s position as a leading healthcare institution committed to enhancing patient safety and quality of care, promoting environmental sustainability in healthcare delivery and improving operational efficiency and patient-centered service delivery.
They also demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to strengthening occupational health and safety through proactive risk-based frameworks and
supporting safe, high-quality nutrition through strengthened food safety systems.
As The Nairobi Hospital celebrates this achievement, it reaffirms that quality is not a 000p00pdestination but a continuous journey toward excellence in healthcare delivery in Kenya and
beyond.
