The Echo Network Africa Foundation (ENAF), in partnership with the Malaysian High Commission to Kenya, has unveiled its 18th Mobile Science Laboratory at Kibera Primary and Junior School, marking a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen practical science education and promote girls’ welfare across the country.

The launch coincided with the global commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day under the theme, Together for a period friendly world.” The initiative reflects a strategic effort to bridge gaps in science education while addressing social barriers that hinder learners, particularly girls, from achieving their full potential.

The newly commissioned laboratory expands ENAF’s growing educational footprint, which now reaches 18 under-resourced schools across 14 counties. The programme is designed to support the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) by providing learners with access to practical science facilities regardless of their geographical location or economic background.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, ENAF President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jennifer Riria, emphasized that access to quality science infrastructure must go hand in hand with investments in human dignity. She noted that practical science laboratories are essential for nurturing innovation and improving learning outcomes. However, she observed that girls cannot fully benefit from such investments if challenges such as period poverty and social stigma continue to keep them away from school. Dr. Riria called for collective action to ensure that every learner, especially girls, has an equal opportunity to participate in education and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E. Ruzaimi Mohamad, said the donation of the mobile science laboratory would enhance science learning at Kibera Primary and Junior School by enabling students to better understand scientific concepts through practical experience. He expressed confidence that the facility would contribute to improved educational outcomes and inspire future success among learners.

Through its Girls Excel Initiative, ENAF continues to complement STEM investments with dignity support. During the current intervention quarter, the foundation distributed 7,678 dignity kits containing sanitary towels to 3,855 girls, helping reduce absenteeism and ensuring that more girls remain in school and actively participate in learning.
