UDA to Media Personalities: Resign if You Want to Do Politics
Kenya's ruling party, UDA, has fired back at media houses it accuses of taking sides in politics and spreading unverified news.
Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan said some journalists have stopped doing their jobs fairly. He named Citizen TV, the Standard Group, and Kameme FM, saying their reporters and anchors are now acting like politicians instead of neutral news people.
"They should resign from their media jobs and join politics openly if that is what they want," Omar said. "We are ready to meet them in a political contest, not hide behind media freedom."
The UDA leader also attacked former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Gideon Moi, together with journalists Chacha Mwita and Linus Kaikai. He accused them of using the media to push their own interests instead of serving the public.
Omar expressed concern that many TV and radio presenters are now taking part in street protests and political activities while still claiming to be neutral journalists.
The party further warned that some media outlets are becoming a danger to national security. Omar said they are attacking police bosses and government officials instead of supporting law and order. He also claimed they give airtime to people breaking the law and make them look like heroes.
"Giving criminals a platform to justify their bad behavior encourages others to break the law," he said.
UDA also told Kenyans to be careful about what they see and hear in the news. The party advised people to check information from different sources and trust official government channels.
This is not the first time the government and media houses have clashed. President Ruto recently accused the Standard Group of running propaganda, which the newspaper strongly denied. Rights groups have advised both sides to solve their differences through the Media Complaints Commission.
