From the Margins to the Mainstage: Youth Convene at Ufungamano to Reclaim Kenya's Future
By John Toris
The halls of Ufungamano House in Nairobi echoed with a resolute message as over 200 youth delegates and civic leaders gathered for the 4th National Youth Convening, held from September 21st to 25th, 2026. Under the banner of “Claiming Spaces and Shaping Kenya,” the five-day forum, organized by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), served as a powerful declaration that young people are no longer content to be passive beneficiaries of decisions made by others.

Young people demanded participation that extends far beyond being mobilized during election cycles, calling for continuous involvement in policy development, public participation, and oversight from the grassroots to the national level.
A key focus of the discussions was the intersection of technology, innovation, and economic opportunity. While acknowledging that digital platforms and artificial intelligence are creating new possibilities for entrepreneurship and employment, delegates warned that access to technology does not automatically translate into access to opportunity. They highlighted persistent barriers, including the high cost of devices and internet, limited digital skills, and inadequate access to mentorship and capital. The youth called for a transition from daily “hustles” to sustainable enterprises, urging stakeholders to invest in practical skills, affordable digital infrastructure, and financing for young innovators.
The communiqué also addressed the pressing mental health and economic pressures facing young Kenyans, including unemployment, rising living costs, and social expectations. It called for stronger support systems and safe spaces for honest conversations.
