Revolutionising Education Through Digitisation - Elimu Holdings CEO

In a world where digital literacy is becoming as essential as traditional education, Elimu Holdings, a Kenyan based company operating for 16 years, stands at the forefront of this transformative movement. Picture a classroom in rural Africa, where students eagerly engage with interactive lessons on tablets, unfettered by any connectivity of resources challenges. This is the new reality, thanks to Elimu Holdings’ mission to digitize education and bring the future to every doorstep. Elimu's mission is to connect every classroom in every school to the world.

Speaking during the 2024 Kenya Internet Summit in Nairobi, Elimu Holdings CEO, Davis Waithaka, opined that the future of education lies in leveraging the digital space. Davis underscored this statement by sharing Elimu’s current undertaking. Elimu Holdings plans to expand their reach to 100,000 schools across various countries in Africa. To this day, they have created websites for over 1200 schools and target digitising the operations of an extra 1000 schools in 2024.

“We not only come in and create working, user-friendly websites for learning institutions. We also ensure we train and mentor the teachers on how to work around the interface and how best to ensure maximum productivity. Moving forward, we are also targeting schools in 10 counties through our Youth Empowerment Program, training them on profitable digital skills which is where the future is,” he asserted.

As clearly explained by Mr. Waithaka, the Elimu Taking Schools Online program, aims to build and maintain official websites for schools, providing them with verified email addresses, parental SMS communication systems, and subsidized educational content. This goes a long way in fostering the legitimacy of the learning institutions, bridging the divide between traditional and contemporary way of learning and more important by far, the program acts as a horizon-expanding initiative that allows students to explore the world of digital content, consequently preparing them for a future driven by technology.

Elimu Holdings plans to expand their reach to 100,000 schools across various countries in Africa. Their mission is to ensure that every school can easily disseminate important information and access the latest teaching tools, ultimately improving the quality of education. To ensure that their reach is expanded globally, Mr. Waithaka called for more partners to come onboard and help grow this far-reaching and noble cause. By his account, these partnerships are crucial for providing comprehensive and sustainable solutions to schools, with the various partners benefiting greatly in terms of public relations and marketing across Elimu's continental webpages.

“With more partnerships we can look into providing more solutions to the schools in different aspects like timetabling system, employee/staff management system and the like. We just need to have a discussion with the institution, understand their problem and then work to solve that issue. This requires partnerships and collaboration,” he noted.

Some key aspects of Elimu's partnerships include and are not limited to technology providers who get to supply schools with the necessary hardware and software for digitization. Education content providers who get to offer subsidized learning materials, including interactive lessons, quizzes, and videos, which are embedded on school websites and telecommunication companies which help Elimu Holdings in providing reliable internet connectivity to schools, ensuring that they can access online resources and maintain communication with stakeholders.

“Imagine being taught about the Zambezi river by a teacher living next to the Zambezi river. Wouldn't that be nice? The information would be more educative from such a professional as compared to other educators who only get to read about the Zambezi. That is what Elimu is all about. Learners get to experience first hand, factual and reliable information from professionals across the world,” said an elated Waithaka.

If a spell was cast upon any reader herein or any listener during the 2024 Kenya Internet Summit, such that they forgot everything else, then Waithaka called for the remembrance of the following:

Elimu is here to create a lasting impact by revolutionising education in Kenya and beyond through digitisation. By working with Elimu, learning institutions can easily share important information to parents, students, and teachers through official websites and verified email addresses. By providing access to digital learning tools and resources, Elimu Holdings is helping to improve the quality of education and reduces the need for paper-based communication, saving costs for schools as well as conserving our environment.
