Philip Murgor Elected Chair of Senior Counsel Bar

By Jared Odhiambo

The Senior Counsel Bar (SCB) has elected a new leadership team to steer the association, with prominent lawyer Philip K. Murgor, SC, taking over as Chairperson. He will be deputised by Joyce Majiwa, SC, while Charles Kanjama, SC, assumes the role of Secretary.
The trio was unanimously endorsed by a strong majority of Senior Counsel and formally installed during the SCB’s annual retreat held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Diamond Leisure Lodge in Diani, Kwale County.

Mr. Murgor succeeds Dr. Fred Ojiambo, SC, who has retired after years of service at the helm. Dr. Ojiambo had taken over the leadership of the Bar in 2013 following the passing of Hon. Mutula Kilonzo, SC. His leadership team included the late Zahir Malik, SC, the late Ken Fraser, SC, and Omesh Kapila, SC. Following the passing of Mr. Malik and Mr. Fraser and the retirement of Mr. Kapila, Mr. Murgor stepped in to serve as interim Vice-Chair and Organising Secretary. He later worked alongside Lucy Muthoni Kambuni, SC, who held the Secretary’s position until her retirement, paving the way for Mr. Kanjama’s entry.

The Senior Counsel Bar, established in 2003, was first chaired by Hon. Sitswila Amos Wako, SC, EGH, Attorney-General Emeritus. Since then, the body has played a pivotal role in providing leadership, mentorship, and thought direction within the legal profession.

The new team is expected to continue this tradition of strengthening the voice and influence of the Senior Bar in Kenya’s legal and public affairs.
