Haki Ni Yetu Marks Four Years of Advancing Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law in Kenya

The Haki Ni Yetu Project convened its Closing Conference in Nairobi on 15 October 2026, bringing together consortium members, grassroots organisations, civil society partners and development partners to reflect on four years of promoting human rights, democracy, equality and the rule of law in Kenya.
Funded by the European Union and implemented through KIOS Foundation, InformAction Kenya and the CSO Network, the project supported more than 60 organisations nationwide. Its work focused on three thematic areas: Democracy and the Rule of Law; Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination; and Business and Human Rights.

Speaking at the conference, Mita Manek, Programs Manager at the European Union Delegation in Kenya, stressed the interconnectedness of these priorities. "Accountable institutions and meaningful public participation strengthen democracy," she said. "Gender equality requires removing barriers that prevent women and marginalised groups from exercising their rights." She commended the consortium and its partners, adding, "Civil society organizations are essential partners in advancing these objectives." Manek urged stakeholders to sustain the gains made. "As Haki Ni Yetu concludes, our shared responsibility continues. We must build on the capacities developed, sustain the partnerships established and ensure that local organisations can continue contributing to their communities."
A keynote speaker highlighted the project's reach, noting that 22 major human rights initiatives and 44 small grants were supported, reaching over 40,000 rights holders and engaging more than 600 duty bearers. "These are not mere numbers; they represent lives changed, communities empowered, and a nation advancing," the speaker said. The speaker also emphasised that human rights must remain central to Kenya's economic growth. "As Kenya's economy grows, human rights must remain at the heart of business. The EU stands ready to support Kenya's ambition for transparent, accountable, and equitable development." The speaker thanked beneficiaries for their dedication, saying, "Your dedication and tenacity have inspired us all and reinforced the truth that we must fight for and protect change."

As the project closes, partners acknowledged that continued investment in grassroots leadership and citizen participation remains essential to lasting change.
