Omar Aden joins ODM, enters Kamukunji race as political contest takes shape

Hon. Omar Aden has formally joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as a lifetime member, launching his bid to unseat Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan in Kenya's 2027 general election.

Aden received his ODM membership certificate at a ceremony at Chungwa House in Nairobi, where he said his campaign would focus on accountability, transparency and inclusive leadership if elected.

“I thank all supporters, the party and friends who have put their trust in me to lead them. My tenure will be marked by accountability and inclusive leadership,” Aden said.

Aden's entry into the race comes as political alignments in Kamukunji shift ahead of the 2027 election. Hassan, who has represented the constituency since 2011, left the Jubilee Party in August and joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The move has opened space for parties including ODM to seek a stronger foothold in the constituency, which covers five wards and has over 128,516 registered voters.

ODM has an established presence in Nairobi, including neighbouring constituencies, and the party's entry into the Kamukunji contest could make the seat an important test of competing political networks ahead of the 2027 polls.
Aden said he was prepared to face his opponents and attributed his confidence to what he described as support from sections of Kamukunji's business community, faith leaders and residents.

With the 2027 election still months away, the Kamukunji contest is expected to evolve as parties settle on candidates and broader coalition arrangements take shape.

Aden said the ODM certificate marks the formal beginning of a campaign aimed at turning his stated grassroots backing into an electoral challenge in one of Nairobi's politically diverse constituencies.
